City, state and local donors broke ground Thursday on a $29 million biomedical research and technology building in the hope of bringing jobs and advanced medical research to the El Paso area.
"This is the start of something really exciting for the region," said Emma Schwartz, president of the Medical Center of the Americas Foundation. "This 60,000-square-foot high-tech biomedical research and technology commercialization building will certainly be an icon for El Paso. Ultimately, this will help create jobs of high value and expand the opportunities available for the El Paso community."
The three-story Cardwell Collaborative Building will be the home to the MCA Foundation, the biomedical institute RedSky and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. The facility also will have a 20,000-square-foot floor, called the Biomedical Incubator, that will offer office and lab space to private companies to conduct research, Schwartz said.
The building is named after Jack Cardwell, owner of C&R Distributing, who was one of the largest donors in a $10 million capital campaign for the creation of the facility. The amount of money donated by Cardwell was not disclosed.
Others who helped were the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Administration, the Hunt Family Foundation and First National Bank, along with more than 30 private donors.
