Feb 01, 2010

AUSTIN, TX October 8, 2009 - James A. Broaddus, Ph.D., P.E., CEO of FJW Construction and President of its parent company, Broaddus & Associates, Inc., has been elected into the University of Texas at Austin's Academy of Distinguished Alumni in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering. Established in 2003, the Academy recognizes professional achievements and contributions of its distinguished graduates. On October 9, Dr. Broaddus will be inducted among ten new members into this group.

Dr. Broaddus established Broaddus & Associates, an Austin, Texas-based building design and construction program management and planning firm in 2000, after careers in public service as a naval officer and university executive involved in building facilities infrastructure. In 9 years, Broaddus & Associates has completed or is currently managing over $5 billion in capital projects. The firm is ranked 32nd in the nation among program management firms by McGraw Hill's Engineering News-Record magazine. He then acquired FJW Group in 2008.

Dr. Broaddus, a native of San Antonio, graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Subsequently, he earned an engineering master's and doctoral degrees in construction engineering and project management, also from UT. Following a 20-year career as a US Navy Civil Engineer Corps Officer and Seabee, constructing facilities on coasts across the globe, Dr. Broaddus served as Associate Director of the Construction Industry Institute (CII), a national research center dedicated to improving quality and cost-effectiveness on construction projects.

Combining his practical Navy construction experience with CII research on best practices, Dr. Broaddus then served as Director of Facilities Planning and Construction for the 15-campus statewide University of Texas System from 1994-1998, where he was responsible for $1.4 billion of academic, research, healthcare, athletic, plus infrastructure and facilities construction. While at UT System, he was a leader in changes made to Texas statutes regarding usage of alternate project delivery methods, such as Design-Build and Construction Management at-Risk, which are now frequently utilized throughout the State of Texas.

Thereafter, Dr. Broaddus became CEO of Design-Build Institute of America in Washington, DC, where he recognized the need for stronger owner project management of capital construction programs. Subsequently, he founded Broaddus & Associates with the goal of being an owner-oriented project manager that brought highly experienced people, with innovative processes and practices, to serve facility owners' best interests and acquired FJW. The two companies have now expanded to 130 professionals in 10 offices located throughout Texas, Mississippi, and in Washington, DC.

Asked about his election to the Academy, Dr. Broaddus remarked, "This honor would have never happened without the lifelong advice and support of my beloved wife and partner, Kay Holmes Broaddus, and the incredible hard work and dedication of the employees at Broaddus & Associates and FJW."
